On
Tuesday January 23rd, 2018, the nominations for the Oscar awards, of
the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to the best in
cinema of 2017, were announced. The romantic / sci-fi film “The
Shape of Water”, directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro,
received 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Del
Toro) and Best Actress (Sally Hawkins); the WWII drama “Dunkirk”
received 8 nominations and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,
Missouri”, got 7 nominations, including Best Actress for favorite
Frances McDormand. Woman director Greta Gerwig got nominated for Best
Direction for “Lady Bird”. Jordan Peele’s horror film “Get
Out” received 4 surprising nominations, including Best Picture and
Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya). The superhero film “Logan” got
nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. “Blade Runner 2049”
received 5 nominations including Best Visual Effects.
Late
night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel will return as host for the 90th
Annual Academy Awards. This year, the telecast will begin a half hour
earlier, airing live at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, March 4,
2018, on ABC.
