“Nomadland”, about an out of work woman who embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling nomad, won in the main Oscar categories, including best picture, best director (Chloe Zhao) and best actress (Frances McDormand), along with Anthony Hopkins, who took home the best actor statuette for “The Father”, in the ceremony celebrated on April 25th, 2021.
Chinese screenwriter and producer Chloe Zhao became the second woman to win the Oscar for best director (the first woman to win was Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”, 2008), while Anthony Hopkins received his second Oscar, now for his dramatic performance in “The Father”. Hopkins won his first golden statuette for “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).
The film “Sound of Metal”, which stars Riz Ahmed and is directed and co-written by Darius Marder, won two Oscars, for best film editing (to Mikkel E.G. Nielsen) and best sound, for the work of Mexican sound engineers Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc and Carlos Cortes.
The innovative and visually stunning science fiction film “Tenet”, directed by Christopher Nolan, won the Oscar for best visual effects, while Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), both won for best supporting actress and supporting actor, respectively.
Denmark’s picture “Another Round” won for best international film, while Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” won the best animated feature film and best original score trophies.
The 93rd Oscar ceremony, an event where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards each year the best in cinema in American and international films, took place on April 25, 2021, at the Union Station and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center.
